Where will you retire?

When retirement becomes a reality your life changes as it should. Your needs change and your resources change from an earnings base to a savings and benefits base. Downsizing your home is a natural move because you no longer need the space that came with raising a family. But where to retire if you are considering a move is not quite as natural a decision; you are on a path to a new lifestyle. You have considered your family and friends and it is natural to want to remain close and it is also natural for you to consider your own best interests. Living in London complements both of these needs with a host of offerings from our community and surrounding areas like no other communities in Southern Ontario. It makes sense to retire in London or the surrounding area. As a knowledgeable and experienced realtor in the London region I can show you all of the benefits that our communities have to offer.

London

London offers big city amenities with a community touch. Located midway between Detroit and Toronto, the city of 500,000 residents London is at the heart of Southwestern Ontario. As the sixth-largest city in Ontario and Canada’s 11th largest city, London serves as a regional hub for surrounding communities.  To newcomers the city offers affordable housing, beautiful parks, low crime rates, excellent education and health care facilities. Whether you are looking for the urban lifestyle of a big city or the appeal and security of mid-size community you will find it here.  London is a great place to live, and enjoy life. If you want it all there are also beautiful lakefront vacation areas along Lake Erie and Lake Huron that are only a short distance with no major traffic woes for you to enjoy in the summer or year round at the fraction of the cost of Muskoka getaways. You earned it and now is the time to make it a reality

Located only a 90-minute drive west along the 401 from Mississauga, retirement living in London has loads to offer.

If you live in west Mississauga, Brampton or Toronto the short drive allows you to stay close to family and friends while benefiting from all of the diversity London has to offer. Located to the west means there are no traffic headaches like other areas where your family and friends would otherwise need to navigate the ‘parking lot’ like traffic of the highways to the north and the east of the city. It’s easy to get to and from London.

Transportation

There is no other city in southern Ontario other than Toronto that has all of the quick access you need to transportation that places all of your travel needs on your doorstep.

Take your pick, London international airport or a short drive to the USA, where if it suits you, you can fly almost anywhere from Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

VIA rail also complements the transportation with daily service into the heart of Toronto, Union Station in only 2 hours for a lot less money that what you would expect to pay. The grandeur of Toronto is still available at your whim but the daily lifestyle of London is yours to live.

If travelling by car, Highways 401 and 402 connect London to Toronto, and to US border crossings at Windsor and Sarnia.

Within the city The London Transit Commission (LTC) offers accessible bus services. LTC accommodates people with disabilities including para-transit services for those with special needs. Licensed taxi companies are also readily available.
Walking, cycling and driving are easy given the city’s layout. There are extensive bike routes within the city including on-street routes, off-street routes and multi-use pathways.

Cost of living

If it is affordability, charm and security of a mid-sized community, London is the perfect choice. London’s safe, secure community with an abundance of recreational facilities are just a few of the qualities that families enjoy in the city. Housing prices are significantly lower in London than comparable regions in Ontario.  As of September 2015 the average sale price for a home in London was $282,241 while in the Toronto area it was $627,914 and even the Kitchen-Waterloo area was higher at $347,177. The city offers an abundance of affordable and quality housing options for those looking to downsize and or move to one floor options.  From great ranches and bungalows to apartment style condos downtown, to a plethora of detached, attached one floor, vacant land and traditional condos in all areas of London. There are numerous choices for all housing needs and budgets.( average price Sept 2015 – ranch $318.393, bungalow $205,910, and a wide range for condos depending on the style.

So if you live in Toronto or Greater Toronto Area (GTA) you could sell your house and purchase outright a home in the London area with money left over to enjoy the plethora of activities and clubs available to you here in London. (See About London under ‘Discover’ tab.)

London presents, good neighbourhoods, excellent education and healthcare facilities, and plenty to do in your leisure time.
